Education the key to reduce compensation claims within the hospitality industry
With injury and poisoning claims accounting for 85 percent of all compensation claims made by the hospitality industry, Pro-Visual Publishing has responded with a call for education through its Hospitality Industry Guide to Safety 2009.
In the last financial year the Australian Safety and Compensation Council reported
5,150 injury and poisoning claims made by the Accommodation, Cafes and
Restaurants industry.
The safety guide, which is being sent out free of charge nationally in May, addresses this issue by focusing on using chemicals and hazardous substances in the
workplace, how to safely manage biological waste and minimising the risk of
slips, trips and falls.
The Hotel Motel & Accommodation Association (HMAA) is delighted to have been involved in the development of the Guide again this year and are confident that it
will raise the awareness of OHS issues among all personnel within the
hospitality industry.
“We at the HMAA encourage all members to display the wall chart in a prominent
location so that employees will have a clear, easy to understand, and
readily available reference for important issues regarding their every day
health and safety,” said Lorraine Duffy, Chief Executive,
HMAA.
Also featured in this year’s Guide are the topics of workplace bullying, cash handling and managing an armed hold-up.
By displaying the chart prominently, employees have a daily reminder and employers are reducing the costs of workplace accidents, illness and injury.
The Guide will be distributed to all HMAA members and 3, 4 & 5 star hotel/motel owner/proprietors across Australia. Additional copies are available and all Guides are produced and distributed without cost thanks to sponsorship.
