How do I best get into management?

Management skills are certainly more a way of life than something you can learn from following a checklist.
In the first instance, you need to constantly see yourself as a leader and a leader is one that gives of themselves without a second thought. Guidance of others, without motive, is another strong trait and people can easily recognise this as genuine (providing it is).

Several golden rules for managing staff are:

  • They need to know they're contributing to the company
  • They need to have goals that are achievable- even something like 'I'm going to make sure I make xx people smile during my shift today'
  • They need to know what their boundaries are within their job.
