Working in the Hospitality - Retention

The hospitality industry is infamous for its high retention rates.

Every year, the associations complain to the governments and the training colleges about the skill shortage in the industry.

There are 3 reasons for this:-

1). Inexperienced Hospitality Professionals Hired

These are usually the casual uni students wanting to make some quick money to support their uni degrees.

They usually aren’t interested in continuing further in this industry and they don’t care about the service which they provide to the customers and it shows!

2). The Induction / Orientation Phrase

When starting a job, regardless of how busy it is: First Impressions Count!

If you make the time for the new employee and make them feel welcome, and inform them about the organizations, without bombarding them with information in the 1st 5 minutes of arriving, then the likely hood of the employee quitting will be reduced somewhat.

3). Management

How well do you manage or train?

We’re all aware that every manager has his or her own individual style in the way in which they lead and manage others.

Whilst I have experienced the good, the bad and the just plain ugly, in managers whether they are bossy, ill tempered, non caring or the army types; it is important to remember that managers are seen as role models. They set the standard of what’s acceptable in the organization.

How they react or act in different situations will be reflected upon the type of employees that are either recruited or actually stay.

If the manager is a poor leader and trainer, then the chances of the turnover will be much higher than with a manager that has good provisos with his employees and knows which employees requires what training.

Finally, it is a well known fact that the overall morale of an organization, the efficiency and the productivity, dramatically reduces when there is evidence of high employee turnover.

So to make sure that you don’t have any unnecessarily high retention rates make sure you are attracting the right kind of employee that actually cares and has a drive to keep the customer happy, you make the time to give a proper induction and orientation to the employee so that they feel welcome and happy in their new place of employment, but most of all, you behave the way you want your employees to behave in the workplace, and you will notice, that maybe, you’re actually looking forward to work today with the knowledge that you won’t have half your team calling in sick!!
