working in the hospitality industry - the orientation

The orientation is the process in which new employees are introduced into the organization. It is important that when you are conducting an orientation that the employee feels valued by the organization, and by the co—workers.

First impressions count.

Being disorganized, running around for stationary or furniture or simply not providing the time for a proper orientation because you are too busy, simply indicates to the new recruit that they aren’t really a high priority.

I have known new employees that go to lunch and never come back, others just don’t show up for work the following day, and all because the job wasn’t what they hoped for!

Let me say it again - First impressions count!

You need to make a good first impression so that the employee will want to stay. Poor Inductions and Orientations are the starting block for high and increased staff turnover.

All new employees are just as nervous, anxious and excited as you , on the first day, so why do you bombarded them with information no sooner than they get there?

It can be from the how the floor operative works – including the micros point of sale system, to the where's and how's of where everything is located in the restaurant; to the orientation of the organization, if it’s a hotel- it can be very daunting!

I have witnessed and experienced this so many times, that

something has to be done. NOW!

Surely, there must be a better way to do this!

The orientation is designed to give you an overview of the organization – the where everything is located, not to give you information overload on the 1st day!

I know, I know, I hear you say, that I simply don’t have enough hours  in a day or enough staff to provide time to ease new employees into the working environment of the hospitality industry.

So what's the solution you ask?
